What is the UMOJA Music Series?

Through the creation of the UMOJA Music Series Raynel Frazier and Yunie Mojica inspire the spirit of community in Hartford with creative concerts that represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa. This seven-week concert series features outstanding musicians who all have a unique connection to the Hartford community.  Previous concerts include the UMOJA Sextet, the Abraham Burton and Eric McPherson Quartet, the Steve Davis Quintet the Josh Evans Sextet & Trumpet Ensemble, Jimmy Greene, Nat Reeves and several more. The goal in selecting musicians to perform is to choose artists who are not only connected to the Hartford Community, but also embody the spirit of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Frazier and Mojica, UMOJA, believe that the principles, Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith can and should be applied year round.

The first concert series in 2012 featured the UMOJA Sextet lead by UMOJA Music Series curators Raynel Frazier and Yunie Mojica. This ensemble was created to celebrate the principles of Kwanzaa through jazz music. Umoja meaning Unity is not only the name of this group but is also the first principle of Kwanzaa. Most of the concerts take place at the Pump House Gallery located in Bushnell Park. This outdoor concert experience is inviting to the entire community, from avid jazz listeners to everyday people who just so happen to pass by.
As a kick off to the UMOJA Music Series the UMOJA Sextet performed music that spoke to the audience and they embodied the spirit of unity.

In following the theme of the UMOJA Music Series each of the remaining concerts will represent a principle of Kwanzaa. The goal is for the musicians to briefly talk about the principle and play music that reflects that principle of Kwanzaa. All of the concerts will take place in various venues throughout the city of Hartford.

Raynel Frazier and Yunie Mojica believe that this concert series is important and is something the Hartford community needs. Not only does it showcase great musicians but is also engages the community by challenging them to reflect on the principles Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and responsibility, Cooperative economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. Yunie Mojica and Raynel Frazier’s vision is to uplift their audience through enjoyable concerts that inspire the community to come together.
